The ABCDE self-check.
A structured way to evaluate a mole or spot using the same five features dermatologists look for. It takes less than a minute.
This is not a diagnostic tool. It can’t detect cancer, rule cancer out, or replace an in-person skin exam. If anything feels off, new, changing, itching, or bleeding, please schedule a visit with a board-certified dermatologist at Modern Dermatology in South Tampa.
A is for Asymmetry, B for Border…
The ABCDE method is taught as a self-awareness tool, not a diagnostic test. It asks five questions about one spot:
- Asymmetry, do the halves match?
- Border, is the edge smooth or ragged?
- Color, one even shade, or several?
- Diameter, bigger than a pencil eraser?
- Evolving, has it changed?

Question 01 / 05
Asymmetry, if you drew a line through the mole, would the halves match?
Most benign moles are roughly symmetric. Asymmetry can be a feature worth a closer look.
